Today, we’re celebrating mothers and everything they give to us.
Reflecting on the weight of early motherhood, Maya Angelou offered us a beautiful passage from her poem, Mother, a Cradle to Hold Me:
It is true
I was created in you.
It is also true
That you were created for me.
I owned your voice.
It was shaped and tuned to soothe me.
Your arms were molded
Into a cradle to hold me, to rock me.
…
I did not dream that you had
A large life which included me,
For I had a life
Which was only you.
This tender poem reminds us of how much mothers hold, often in ways we don’t fully see or understand. Behind every cradle and soothing moment is a mother who, herself, is facing intense change and recovery. A mother who feels alone and isolated without the support she needs.
At 4th Trimester, we know postpartum care is absolutely necessary. When mothers receive support, everything changes for them. For their babies, their families, and their communities.
Yes, mothers deserve celebration today – and they deserve dignity and support every day. If we value families, we must build systems that recognize the contributions of mothers and make unconditional care possible.
