When Leaving Home Means Risking Everything

The Supreme Court made a devastating decision on September 8th: in a 6-3 ruling, the court gave ICE agents permission to stop and question people in Los Angeles based on how they look, what language they speak, where they work, or simply where they happen to be standing. While this doesn’t change due process for those arrested by ICE officials, it allows justification of arrest without a warrant for virtually anyone.

We’ve seen the devastating outcomes as thousands of families have been torn apart by this administration. Income loss, declining health, and hunger are just a few of the consequences that reverberate across our communities.

Parents are making impossible choices, living in fear of horrific detention conditions and possible deportation—without their children. Mothers in our neighborhoods quietly arrange who will feed their infants if they are detained. Parents are sending teenage children—U.S. citizens—to grocery stores while they stay hidden at home. Pregnant women are skipping prenatal appointments, missing work, and isolating during one of the most vulnerable times in their lives: pregnancy and the fourth trimester.

This is where Mama2Mama steps in.

We’ve always believed that care is unconditional. As families are scared for their future, we’re expanding our reach to meet them where they are—literally at their doorsteps.

How We’re Responding

Essential Items Delivery: We’re bringing diapers, formula, postpartum supplies, and food directly to families who can’t safely leave their homes. No questions asked, no documentation required—just care.

Home-Based Birth Worker Services: We’re connecting families with lactation consultants, mental health providers, and perinatal specialists who can provide sliding-scale, at-home care. Because every parent deserves support during their fourth trimester, regardless of immigration status.

Three Ways You Can Take Action Right Now

  • Fund This Work: Your donation directly purchases essential items and subsidizes at-home care for families. Every dollar ensures no parent has to choose between safety and the care they deserve during this critical time. Donate.
  • Birth Workers Needed: Are you a lactation consultant, mental health provider, doula, or other birth worker in the LA area? We’re looking for providers who can offer:
    • Sliding-scale or pro bono services
    • Home visits for families who can’t travel to appointments
    • Flexible scheduling around families’ safety concerns
    • If you can help, email us at volunteer@mama2mama.org with “Home Services” in the subject line.
  • Volunteer: Want to help but not a birth worker? We need volunteers to gather and help organize and pack essential supplies for deliveries. Every extra pair of hands makes it possible for us to reach more families who need support. Email us at volunteer@mama2mama.org.

We don’t just imagine a safer postpartum experience—we’re building it. While the Supreme Court endorses discrimination and leaders weaponize fear, we’re proving community care is more powerful than systemic cruelty. With your help, we can ensure people get access to the resources they need without putting themselves at heightened risk because we know that every parent, regardless of immigration status, deserves to feel safe and dignified as they begin their journey into parenthood.
